Cycle routes and lanes
These fall under the county cycling strategy. Whilst there are some rural cycleways, the extensive development of cycle paths in rural areas is thought to be potentially detrimental to the environment with any lighting for such paths would be detrimental to light pollution. The extra resources to build these paths is also considered to be contrary to sustainability.
The current strategy is therefore focussed on building cycle lanes on the footways alongside existing roads, or as marked cycle lanes at the side of existing carriageways.
